Work in Canada

Canada welcomes over 90,000 temporary foreign workers (per year) that meet Canadian skill shortages, including live-in caregivers.

In order to work in Canada, a work permit is needed for most temporary jobs. A work permit usually indicates the position, the employer and the period authorized for work.

To apply for a work permit from outside Canada, you must first obtain a job offer from a Canadian employer and a written confirmation from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). This confirmation is called a positive labour market opinion (LMO).

However, you can apply for a work permit from inside Canada if:

  • you have a valid study or work permit, or your spouse or parents have a study or work permit
  • you have a work permit for one job but want to apply for a work permit for a different job
  • you have a temporary resident permit that is valid for six months or more or
  • you are in Canada because you have already applied for permanent residence from inside Canada.

Please note that if you come from a visa exempt country and you already hold a labour market opinion from HRSDC (or your position does not need one), you can apply for a work permit when you enter Canada.

Applying from inside or outside Canada, you will also be required to show that you have enough money to support yourself and your family while you are in Canada, have no criminal record and be in good health.

If you intend to work temporarily as a live-in caregiver, please note that there are special requirements.
